A few years back I heard a story on NPR about a book on or related to
the modern (19th century onward) fascination with conspicuous wealth. It
might have been specifically related to the one thing I remember, or it
might have been more general. What I recall is the discussion about
people commissioning portraits of their cattle to hang on the walls
along with portraits of family. Now I'd like to find that book again and
I have no idea how to isolate in a search since the term 'cattle' gets
huge numbers of hits on NPR.org and the word might not even appear in
the actual copy on the corresponding article. Does anyone possibly
recall this book I am recalling so vaguely?
