In my query about whether there was a "Watertown" in Ireland, I followed
one suggestion and contacted An Post, the Irish postal service. Below is
their reply, with the individual's name withheld:

Hello Bill,

Have done quite a bit of checking at this end and my finding are similar
to your own - a number of Waterstowns, are other variation but no
Watertown. The dropping or addition of that rogue 's' wouldn't be
unusual in Irish placenames. Your ancestor could very well hail from a
Waterstown or indeed from a townland once known as Watertown which has
since become Waterstown.

If there is anything else I can do, don't hesitate to get in touch. Do
you perhaps have a closer geographic 'fix' for the townland involved,
region, county or nearest town etc.

Thanks to everyone who helped me with my query.

Bill Davis
