The Topographic Engineering Center has responded to a call for
geographic and map information in support of the relief efforts after Cyclone
Nargis, with heavy rains and winds of over 120 miles per hour, struck Burma
(aka Myanmar) earlier this month.
See: http://www.tec.army.mil/Burma/index.html#other These maps,
reports and other data are used by the US Dept. of State and the US Armed
Forces in preparation and planning of the relief efforts.
At the moment, Burma is refusing to allow US Marines and other
non-governmental relief agencies inside their country. So at the present,
only limited relief with food, water and medical supplies can enter Burma. If
and when we are allowed in, these geographic and geological resources can be
used to plan for transportation of people and supplies; the identification
for appropriate landing zones; identifying hospital, supply depot and command
post locations; water resources and sanitation facilities; crowd control
bottlenecks, and the thousands of other decisions that need to be made in
responding to the engineering demands of supplying emergency relief.
Some of the items on the webpage require access with a special
identification card, and are limited to US Government and military forces.
Most are open to the public.
