Pat Naughtin has alerted me to a book called The Secret Life of
Wombats by James Woodford,
http://www.bookworm.com.au/shop/scditem.asp?ProdID=47356.
>From the description: "In 1960, a fifteen-year-old schoolboy called
Peter Nicholson began to investigate the secret world of wombats by
crawling down their burrows and making friends with them."
>From a review: "Woodford has don [sic] the research, he has read
widely, spoken with the major wombat pundits and with the lay
observers."
Who knew that there were wombat pundits, major or otherwise? I thought
the whole book was a joke till I learned that it won the prize for
Best Popular History Book of 2002 from the Royal Zoological Society of
New South Wales.
I've also learned that the members of the Women's Mountain Bike & Tea
Society call themselves Wombats (http://www.wombats.org/.) But I'll
bet a lot of you womb at s already knew that; some may even belong to
both groups.
