[PW] Music scholarships

As a former music professor, I can think of two models for music scholarships:
- the institution gives you a scholarship to study at that institution (possibly with the requirement that she play trumpet in certain ensembles)
- certain organizations sponsor general scholarships, selected by audition, but they are more like prizes, smaller than scholarships
- organizations like Rotary International support study abroad
So what you've found is right. Your friend might apply to several institutions and audition for admission/scholarship.
You could check with high school guidance offices to see what they have for students going on to college, or with college offices that help seniors find graduate schools and funding.
What degree(s) does your friend have so far? If she got accepted into a doctoral program in trumpet or music education, that might be fully subsidized.
Hope this helps!

Subject: [PW] Music scholarships
A little help, please. A friend wishes to return to her music studies
- she's a talented trumpeter - but her present profession of barista
doesn't offer much hope in terms of funding the expensive studies.
I've been taking a look around online for music scholarships, but
unless I'm just missing my aim with the search, find that in America
a) scholarships tend to be for specific places of study, and
b) they're a bit mingy - the biggest one I've found was for $3,000,
which isn't going to get her far.
I thought of Fulbrights, but they're closed for this year, and anyway
she doesn't necessarily want to study outside the US. I'm wondering
if it's just a terminology problem - maybe they're called something
else in America. I tried 'bursary', but got no further.
I've looked for state-funded scholarships, but haven't found
anything; there seem to be state arts councils, but they're
apparently not like the European ones. There must be some US arts
administration, but I'm too dim to find it.
Can anyone give me any good pointers for this search for a
scholarship that will really fund her studies in the college of her
choice?
