There is a reference in a legal case from 1844 (I looked for
references that might have been current during Thoreau's lifetime) to
a process of cultivating pine trees for turpentine extraction.
Turpentine was extracted from standing trees, and this may have
created such work areas, or clearings, in the forest.  However, I am
just speculating, I could not find a specific reference to the exact
term that wasn't also linked to Thoreau's writings.
