The following old newspaper article will better explain exactly how the
people of the past considered "somatic exhaustion" in relation to death
and why it might be listed as a cause of death.

6 April 1889
Decatur Daily Republican
Decatur, Illinois

Somatic death may be briefly described as the failure of the main organs
of the body, the brain, heart and lungs, to perform their functions, while
cellular death is where the cells or tissues of the body die Both may
occur at the same time, but the writer urges, the former may take place
without the latter, and often does, and in all such cases there is a
chance of resuscitating the dead person until cellular death supervenes.

Much thanks, Sue. It looks as if John D.'s inspired reconstruction will turn
out to be correct.

I am keeping after the cemetery there in Cleveland, and its attendant
archives, to try and locate the original handwritten version. We may get lucky...
if I obtain it, I will post the results.

No wonder people back then were getting patents for a bell-system attached
to the coffin - in case the diagnosis was in error and the person was being
buried by mistake. All kinds of "exhaustion," I guess...

  Thanks again!

Allen
