The Yale Book of Quotations has the following:
[Of drawing:] An active line on a walk, moving freely without a goal. A walk for a walk's sake.
Paul Klee, Pedagogical Sketchbook ch. 1 (1925)

Subject: [PW] Paul Klee quotation
A library patron is trying to verify the provenance and locate the source or origin of a quotation attributed to artist Paul Klee, who described drawing as taking a line for a walk.
The websites listed below, searched by the patron, all allude to this quotation, but do not cite the publication or the precise circumstances in which Klee actually made (or wrote) this statement, whether while he was teaching at the Bauhaus, etc.
Thanks for your help.
