The footnote in MURDER ON TRIAL refers to page 174 of this book:

Author          Schlereth, Thomas J.
Title           Victorian America : transformations in everyday life, 
1876-1915 / Thomas J. Schlereth.
Edition         1st HarperPerennial ed.
Published       New York : HarperPerennial, 1992.

and on page 174 does make this claim in almost identical words.  Unfortunately,
while his book is fairly heavily footnoted, he doesn't offer a footnote for
this assertion.
