A further search on Google books brings up a preview of the book,
_Murder on Trial, 1620-2002_, which has a chapter that says that
children were singing the rhyme at the 1893 Columbia Exhibition in
Chicago that summer when the trial took place. Unfortunately, the
footnote (4) that tells where this information came from is not included
in the preview.

Subject: [PW] ? Lizzie Borden Rhyme Dating (Quotation Query #648)
I am having trouble finding evidence for the existence of the Lizzie
Borden "Lizzie Borden took an axe And gave her mother forty whacks"
rhyme prior to a 1907 hit in Google Books. Can anyone supply earlier
evidence?
