Hi all,
I don't think the touring exhibitions was limited to national artifacts
of the USA - If I remember correctly William Holman Hunt's painting "The
Light of The World" (familiar in reproduction to many churchgoers)
toured the world about 100 years ago and drew enormous crowds long
before the modern museum blockbuster exhibition was thought of (I
remember it drew some astoundingly high percentage of the population
here in Perth, Western Australia). You can find out more in "Holman
Hunt and the Light of the World/Jeremy Maas
<http://books.google.com.au/books?id=yp6PAAAACAAJ&dq=%22holman+hunt+and+
the+light+of+the+world%22> " (I think this is the book I've read,
can't find a picture of it at present and the one I've read belongs to
my Dad so can't confirm the details at present...and our internet
connection is crawling today too!) - managed to dredge up this quote
from findarticles...
"Despite critics' reservations, the picture was enormously popular with
the public. Hunt ultimately painted a second, larger version of it,
which was reproduced in many engravings and chromolithographs. When the
replica toured the Commonwealth between 1905 and 1907, seven million
people waited in long lines to see it."

Hope this adds to the mix!
