A little Saturday political humor ...

The Texas branch library where I work is an early voting site. The lines
were not too long the first eight days or so, but OMG, Thursday and
Friday there were no fewer than 40 - 50 people in line at any one time
for 12 hours straight. At times it was probably more than 100. (Yes, I
am VERY happy to see huge turnouts.) When the line gets long it is in
front of the reference desk, so folks who don't normally visit our
library were waiting for a long time and experienced all our comings and
goings.

This particular branch does not yet have automated computer sign-up, so
we write down the names and page the person over the intercom when their
turn arrives. Thursday, one of our regulars signed up and went outside
for a time. I called the person for a computer and the person didn't
arrive. I called the person a couple of more times and then passed the
computer on to the next patron. A couple of minutes later the person
came back inside and I said I'd had to give the computer away and would
call the person next. I was very, very busy putting a patron's books on
hold, getting people off the computer and answering the telephone and
didn't pay any attention to where the person was sitting. When the next
terminal opened I paged the person again over the intercom only to
realize the person was a couple of feet away.

Then a voter came over and asked me what did I think I was doing by
announcing that name three times right at the voting site. I was
momentarily stunned because I thought the man was teasing, but when he
started to shout I realized he was not. He accused me of just saying the
name over and over on the loudspeaker and kept asking if I thought that
was right. I told him I was announcing a computer for that person. He
kept repeating his comments in an increasingly louder voice. He started
making a louder scene and telling me he didn't believe there was anybody
by that name in here and asking what if the news stations came in and
what they would think about me announcing that name right here at the
voting site ... I then told him I would introduce him to the person I
was calling. I I took him to the person and asked if she would tell the
man her name. Smiling, she politely said: "Hillary." The man told her he
didn't believe her and asked how much I'd paid her to get her to do
that.

I wished him a nice day and he stomped out the doors ...

Funny, nobody complained when I paged Mike or John or Ron or Ralph, but
I haven't had a Barack sign up. :-))
