Here are a couple of potential sources on literature for children on
Native Americans:
Debbie Reese's blog from UIUC:
http://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/ [no hits in
search for O'Dell]
She recommends oyate.org: http://www.oyate.org/aboutus.html [no listing
for that novel]
Also, on the American Indian Library Association site is an excellent
guide to detecting bias problems:
http://aila.library.sd.gov/publications/inotindian.htm
Unfortunately our copy of Through Indian eyes : the native experience in
books for children / [edited] by Beverly Slapin and Doris Seale.
[Philadelphia, Pa. ; Gabriola Island, B.C. : New Society Publishers,
c1992.] is not available; perhaps you can find one or a newer edition in
your area.

Subject: [PW] Book review question
A patron has asked me to find reviews of Scott O'Dell's book, Streams to
the River, River to the Sea: A novel of Sacagawea. She has been told
that while O'Dell's book won praise when first published, it was not
well-received within the Native American community. I'd like to verify
this, but am running into dead ends. Can anyone else offer some
insight?
Many thanks!
