[PW] Typewriter ratings?

Our library recently bought a brand new Brother SX-4000. We couldn't
find any authoritative reviews but there were many online reviews from
places like Pricegrabber.com . Most of the brands out there are from
companies that have been around awhile like Brother, Smith-Corona,
Nokia, etc. Our only concern was daisy-wheel or ball. Considering that
we were purchasing it for patrons who needed a typewriter to fill out an
occasional form, we went with the economical daisy-wheel. Personally, I
hope your manager lightens up and just let you buy the type you need.
It's only office supplies!

Ah, the Vermont Country Store, that emporium of products we think we'll
never see again - shoulda thought of that. As a matter of fact I was
there just a few weeks ago, taking a break between snowshoeing at
Stratton, but after walking around absorbing multiple hits of nostalgia,
I bought apple butter and sock liners, which - neither alone nor in
combination - can handle an NCR form quite as efficiently as a
typewriter can, alas.

Actually, I agree; IBM Selectrics are (were?) great machines, but I can
only find refurbished - and my Branch Manager did specify "new". And she
would like to see some sort of evaluation or review, and that's where
I'm hitting a wall.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Sites other than epinions, magazines
other than Consumers, maybe a typewriter-users' listserv? or your own
personal experiences buying a new typewriter?

Thanks!

Barb
