I don't have any facts to contribute, but I remember learning once 
that what constitutes a best seller is surprising. A book doesn't 
have to sell the gazillion copies one might expect in order to 
qualify. There are different lists, based on different data, but even 
a not-very-popular book can make it for a short time if it sells in a 
blitz to its niche audience, after which it quietly disappears.
