I'm not sure about Good Reads, never having spent much time on 
it.  But are you familiar with Brijit?  It's a site that offers a 
synopsis of "the world's best long-form content," ... which it not 
only abstracts but also rates in terms of whether you should go get 
the original right away or not waste your time...  I don't always 
agree with their assessments, but they do cover a wide range of 
magazines and newspapers, and they may do some books too-- I'm not certain.
