One possibility is the Serrated Edge series by Mercedes Lackey:

Born To Run (1992)
Wheels of Fire (1992)
When the Bough Breaks(1993)
Chrome Circle (1994)

There are probably others --- it's a pretty common theme in fantasy 
literature, but I'm currently re-reading this series, so it's the 
one that floated to the top first.
