Tom, I once did a lot of research on Nellie Bly but cannot remember the
answers for these questions.  I think she was paid by article or by the
word.
The definitive biography (to my mind) is Brooke Kroeger's NELLIE BLY:
DAREDEVIL, REPORTER, FEMINIST.  1994  ISBN: 0-8129-1973-4  It's 631
pages and has extensive bibliography and notes sections.  We have it if
the author wants to ILL it.

wonder if anyone has insights.  I'm trying to track these down myself,
but if anyone on the list can help, I'd welcome the assistance.
