Thanks to all who responded so quickly.

I knew about Beatrice Fairfax (she's mentioned in the intro to "But Not
For Me", the 1930 Gershwin song) and Dorothy Dix too, and I have no
doubt that there may have been other even earlier advice columnists.
The specific question, though, was whether "Miss Lonelyhearts" predated
1933, and I haven't seen any evidence that she did.

As for "no clue", I appreciate Sue's literary references, but they all
occur in the context where one would hope to find a "clue" in the
traditional sense of "a piece of information that sheds light on a
mystery".  Obviously there have been cases for centuries where
investigators have been able to find "no clue".  

The anecdotal evidence of Sue's grandfather is closer to what I'm after
-- if he really stomped around the house saying "I have no clue to
what's happening here", meaning "I'm confused or baffled", that's of
interest.  The difference in shade of meaning may be one that others do
not share.
