Not a librarian, but my mom was a "gentle reader" (though she'd
tolerate a little sex in a book for the sake of a good read).
She enjoyed the Aunt Dimity books, though the last two titles are
darker than the first ones, and there's a bit of a mystery and a
bit of gentle spiritualism (Aunt Dimity is a benign ghost who
makes good things happen with her counsel): Nancy Atherton is
the author, and the books up to the 11th one (Aunt Dimity and the
Deep Blue Sea) are not dark.
Gerald Durrell's memoir of a couple of years of his childhood on
Corfu, My Family and Other Animals, is funny and fun.
She also liked Bailey White's books, including Mama Makes Up Her
Mind and Garrison Keillor's Lake Woebegone Days.
Some other authors she liked (I can't state how close to your
specs they are because I haven't read the books)
Bill Richardson
Fannie Flagg
Joan Medlicott
Earl Hamner
Adriana Trigiani
Luanne Rice
Barbara Delinsky
Lisa Wingate
Anita Brookner
Slightly off-kilter from most of the gentle reads: Connie Willis'
To Say Nothing of the Dog -- a very odd blend of history, science
fiction, and a little gentle romance with a nod to Jerome K
Jerome's "Three Men and a Boat" (also a gentle read).
We have some longing from afar, some hand holding and that's
about it on the sex front -- nice humor, though.
Her other books are much, much darker, however.
