I don't know if they're available in large print, but Jill Churchill has two mystery series that might do. Her Jane Jeffry series is set in a Chicago suburb Jane is a stay-at-home mom who gets involved in murders (not graphically described. The second series, called Grace and Favor, is set in upstate New York in the 1930s. The sleuths are a brother and sister, formerly wealthy, who were left in near-poverty when their father committed suicide at the time of the Crash. They inherit a "cottage" from a great-uncle, and must live in it for ten years before the estate will be theirs. Since they must also support themselves, they take a variety of jobs in the village - teaching in an elementary school and as nurse's aides in a nursing home.
