"Obama lived with his grandparents in an apartment near the school ...
Obama came to Punahou only by the grace of financial assistance with
the tuition -- $15,000 a year in today's dollars." ("Obama's peers
didn't see his angst" by Richard A. Serrano; The L.A. Times, Mar 11,
2007. pg. A.20.)
"... Obama and his mother moved back to Honolulu, where they lived
with his grandparents, who scraped together the tuition for the city's
top prep school." ("Barack Obama full of surprises" by Margaret
Carlson, syndicated columnist.; Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Feb 18,
2007. p. F2.)
Presumably Carlson didn't make this up, but why the Times would be so
vague about the source of the assistance is a mystery.
