I ran a quick search using both "hand holding" and "holding hands" and
got a few results in Social Science Citation Database - maybe the
reversal of the terms helps?

Subject: [PW] Reference question on the history of hand holding

Hi,

I'm hoping someone on this list may be able to suggest some search
terms or

potential sources for a question. I have a student who needs to find
out information

about the history of hand holding throughout history and across
cultures. She's aware

that this is a broad topic and that the information may not be
available; that's why she's

starting early, so she may change her topic if necessary. So far I have
checked, with

little luck, the following databases:

            Academic Search Complete

            Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection

            Sociological Collection

            Research Library

            CSA Social Sciences Databases

I used the search terms handholding, hand holding and hand-holding in
each one of the

databases and came up with a few possible citations but she needs a
little bit more information.

We checked our local catalog for any books and came up with two books
but she said they still

did not give her the information for which she is looking. In my next
to last resort, I checked

Worldcat using the variations of hand holding but did not find anything
that seemed to fit her needs.

Last of all I checked Google Scholar for any references and came up with
a few, but I'm still not sure

that they will work for her. I used the following subjects in Google
Scholar:

            hand holding, handholding, hand-holding

The above three with the additions of anthropology and
history, or personal touch and history,

or interpersonal touch and history, or cultures and history as well as
interpersonal rituals and history.

Manners and personal touch and history, anthropology and personal touch
and history

Does anyone out there have any suggestions of possible subject headings
to use to find information

or recommendations of titles that might contain information? At this
point I'm ready to give her

what information I have and suggest that she might want to change her
topic.

If you would send any suggestions directly to my email (bethp at gdn.edu),
I'll appreciate it.

Please excuse any typos or ramblings and thanks in advance for any help,

       Beth Pye
