I suspect that the term, "picturesque" is used in the metaphorical
sense. _Virginia Soldiers of 1776_ includes the following paragraph
about Balmain:

"Dr. Balmaine resided in Winchester...The Rev. Alexander Balmaine was
appointed a Chaplain to the Thirteenth Va. Regt. previous to the 1st of
Mar., 1777, but I am unable to ascertain the particular day. I perfectly
remember travelling with him from Winchester to Pittsburg after his
appointment, and that we set out on the journey the 1st week in March in
the same year. I further certify that Mr. Balmain remained in service
until the final close of the war, in Nov., 1783. Signed James Wood,
Brig. Genl. Contl. Army."

Subject: [PW] looking for illustration of Balmain, revolutionary war
chaplain

I have a student who is trying to locate a sketch or painting of
Alexander
Balmain (or Balmaine), who was a chaplain during the American
revolution.

>From a "hobby historian from the 30's" the student has this
description,
"There is a picturesque glimpse of him [Alexander Balmain] starting off
with colonel James Wood Jr. for Wheeting, to be found in one of L.C.
Burgess's volumes on Virginia Soldiers in The Revolution, based on The
Land Bounty Warrants." The student suggests the destination may also
have
been spelled "Wheating."

We have not been able to locate any books with that exact title or
author.
I've listed a couple of the closest matches below

Virginia Soldiers of 1776 by Burgess, Louis Alexander. There are several

printings of this book. We received through ILL a copy of the 1973
reprint
by Genealogical Publications and found that it did not have any
illustrations. A 1973 reprint from Spartanburg, S.C. Reprint Co also did

not have any illustrations. There are about four other editions in
FirstSearch, but none of them indicate that they have illustrations.

Virginia Soldiers of the American Revolution by Eckenrode, Hamilton
James.
Closest title match, but no indication in the FirstSearch record of
illustrations in the book.

Virginia soldiers' claim to western lands adjacent to Fort Pitt by
Mercer, George. The FirstSearch records for this book indicates that it
contains facsimiles.

If anyone would be able to check some of these books and let us know
whether they might contain what the student wants, the help would be
much
appreciated! Or if anyone would be able to suggest another place to look

for this illustration, that could also be useful.

Thanks for your help!
