NYT feature notes that "part VI" of a series of this name by Moffett was
published in ST NICHOLAS magazine for June 1901. (Presumably earlier and
perhaps later parts appeared there as well; possibly the earliest dated back
to 1898... [last article, X, in St Nicholas was Oct 1901.] 'Leo Stevens' was
part III in Mar 1901, as per Kathy.] First of this series in SN seems to be
Jan 1901.

"mystery" probably solved.

This is what appears in the 1901 edition:

"ACKNOWLEDGMENT
About one half the chapters in this book appeared serially in " St. Nicholas
Magazine,"
the other half in the "New York Herald," and two chapters on the 'Locomotive
Engineer,' and one on the 'Wild-Beast Tamer' appeared in "McClure's
Magazine."
Thanks are extended to all these for permission to republish. "

also:

THE CENTURY Co.
Copyright, 1898, by S. S. McCLURE Co.
Copyright, I90I, by CLEVELAND MOFFETT.
Published October, 1901
THE DEVINNE PRESS. "

The statement about LS's age appears only in the 1901 book (p. 123), as
being barely 30 years old, so this is more evidence that LS was born in/around
1871 after all (supported by Sue's old newspaper article). The other dates,
on the parachute medal, at the Smithsonian, etc., even his obits (with
1876-1877) are incorrect. His claimed birthplace of Cleveland, Ohio, also seems very
problematic. His parents were Frank and Anna Stevens, but they do not seem
to be ID'd in any Census. Leo's mother apparently apprenticed him out to a
circus entertainer (in Philly) and in 1875 sued (successfully) to get him back.
He had an early career as a tightrope walker named "Prince Leo."

Thanks!

Allen
