Hi Jeanne,
As a huge Cohen Brothers fan, I am happy to try to offer some help :)
The phrase in the movie implies the 'endures' meaning of 'abides', rather
than 'lives'. For example, despite all the crazy stuff that goes on in the
movie against him, Jeffrey 'The Dude' abides in spite of it all.
