Jeanne:
"The Dude" is how the main character (played by Jeff Bridges) refers to himself. As you know from the reviews, he's a slacker (supposedly a former political activist). During the course of the movie, he has run-ins with some dangerous types, makes several screw-ups but somehow manages to muddle through. Towards the end of the film meets a guy referred to in the script simply as "The Stranger."
The Dude: Yeah, well. The Dude abides.
The Stranger: The Dude abides. I don't know about you but I take comfort in that. It's good knowin' he's out there. The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners. Shoosh. I sure hope he makes the finals.
Does any of this help? Can anyone add any crucial context/interpretation of the film?

Actually it's for my mother. She often misses the point in her daily comic
strips, and she calls on me for an explanation. Recently she has been seeing
the expression "The dude abides" in the Mutts strip. I know it's a quote
from "The Big Lebowski." I've read several reviews but (since I haven't
seen the movie and don't know the context) I can't come up with anything
that actually makes good sense to my mother' Can anyone help? Thanks!
