In a roundabout manner...

I searched WorldCat, looking for books with "poe" and "fiction"
as subject headings BUT without "poe" as author, and limiting to
the date period you suggested (approximately).

This did give me (along with a lot of false drops -- nonfiction
about Poe's fiction, mostly) -- titles and authors of some eight
or ten fictional works that seemed like possibilities (once I'd
eliminated a few I was familiar with and knew didn't match
your description).

I tried googling the titles on the short list to see if I
could find reviews of plot summaries that would either confirm
or deny, and in the course of looking for such the Amazon
list turned up, since he had cited most of the titles I
had found. So I figured posting the URL for the list might
be the fastest way to get the titles out for someone to
recognize.

And so -- which of the books on the list was it?
