[PW] ? - Novel about a man obsessed with Poe

Hello,
 I’m a librarian in Wisconsin and I'd appreciate any 
tips to help me find a novel that a customer checked out 
from a public library sometime ago. Unfortunately I have 
no info. on author or title. I think it was probably published 
in the '80s or early nineties. 
The plot is about a man who’s obsessed with Edgar Allen Poe or
thinks he is the reincarnation of Poe. He embarks on 
a journey to Poe landmarks. Eventually, it's revealed that 
the man has this obsession because he's trying to escape 
the traumatic history of his real life. Thanks for your help.
