Perhaps this is the article? It was found in _PsycInfo_, by searching:
librari* and (helpful* or illness or dress*), limited to 1965-1980 which
retrieved 7 items, the unchronologically limited version retrieves 204!:

Title: Effect of appearance on requests for help in libraries.

Author(s): Kroll, Howard W., Public Health Service, Alcohol, Drug Abuse,
& Mental Health Administration, Philadelphia, PA
Moren, Deborah K.

Source: Psychological Reports, Vol 40(1), Feb 1977. pp. 129-130.

Abstract: Librarians in 8 public libraries provided comparable help to a

dressed as a college student. Possible reasons for these data (the
Fisher exact probability test was used) are discussed.
