Allen --

Your problem is heightened by the fact that no 1898 edition exists...

(1) WorldCat shows no edition earlier than 1901.

(2) The AMERICAN CATALOGUE for 1895-1900 does not list the book. The
cumulation for 1900-1905 does, thus:

Moffett, Cleveland. Careers of danger and daring. '01 (O26) il.
O net, $1.80; [New cheaper ed.] '03 (O17) il. D. $1.50.

(3) Earliest mention in either the NEW YORK TIMES or CHICAGO TRIBUNE
per fulltext searching is 1901:

         1. MAGAZINE FEATURES.; Principal Contents of Prominent
Ametican Ones.
New York Times (1857-Current file). New York, N.Y.: May 25, 1901. p. BR8 (1
page)

         2. Table of Contents 2 -- No Title
Chicago Daily Tribune (1872-1963). Chicago, Ill.: Aug 1, 1901. p. 16 (1 page)

NYT feature notes that "part VI" of a series of this name by Moffett was
published in ST NICHOLAS magazine for June 1901. (Presumably earlier and
perhaps later parts appeared there as well; possibly the earliest dated back
to 1898, though that is unlikely.) TRIBUNE same information but no part
number.

Later cites in the NYT:

         4. NOTES AND NEWS.
New York Times (1857-Current file). New York, N.Y.: Aug 31, 1901. p. BR14
(1 page)

         5. BOOKS RECEIVED.; History and Biography.
New York Times (1857-Current file). New York, N.Y.: Oct 19, 1901. p. BR17
(1 page)

describe the book first as forthcoming and then as just received.

So: 1901 is definitely the first book appearance; some or all of the contents
appeared in ST NICHOLAS earlier that year, and possibly earlier than that.
