Thanks, Denny, this does seem to be p. 294 in Harpers Magazine (Jan 1876),
and we were able to work around the 'subscription' angle (thru Cornell). The
short article involved cruelty to children when used as circus acrobats and it
mentioned this "Prince Leo".
The US Aeronautics and Space Museum has some bio material on him, giving
alternate birth-dates of 1873 and 1877. His official obit up in Fly Creek
(where else?) gives Sept 27, 1877. They will be sending this to me.
But based on an old article that Sue W. found, it seems as if he was
really born in 1871, month unverified. Maybe in Cleveland. He seems to have been
caught up in an issue at that time of 'cruelty to children' by various
traveling exhibitors.
A possible solution may also come from an wearly book in which he was
highlighted (with a small chapter):
Careers of Danger and Daring (1898), by Cleveland Moffett
The problem here is in getting the first edition of 1898 - later ones
abound (1901, 1903, 1908, etc). This book (in Google Books, but 1908 ed) states
that Leo Stevens is around 30 years old, but was that age 'changed" for any
of the different editions? What did it say in 1898? None of the usual book
dealers seem to have the very first ed.
