[PW] Two fictional works

We have 2 readers' advisory questions at our library that are stumping
us:

 

1.       A patron read a book in the late 80s or early 90s where the
characters were mythical creatures (gnomes, dragons, etc.). There were
no humans in the book and she thinks the gnomes/trolls rode on
dinosaurs.  A portion of the book talked about the weapons and armor for
each side (turtle shells were used for shields), and there was a big
battle between the "good woodland fantasy creatures" and the evil
dragons/lizards/reptiles.

It is not any of the following:

Redwall series  

Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Wrede

Dragonlance series

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

 

2.       Another patron remembers reading a book in third grade (1984)
that featured a main character whose name she believes was 'Once'.  She
also believes that 'Once' was the title of the book, but we haven't been
able to find evidence of that.  The main character was either a mouse or
some other small creature, and he was disgruntled because his name was
at the beginning of so many stories  ---"Once upon a time..."

 

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
