Apparently the first edition was called "Edwards' Herbal", and was reissued as "The British Herbal".

Maybe the library at Kew can help?

They have a section dedicated to botanical illustrations: http://www.kew.org/library/illus.html.

They have a copy of a subsequent edition to the "British Herbal":
http://www.kew.org/library/index.html

Their OPAC record says he flourished 1768-1795:

"Language code eng

Title A select collection of one hundred plants : consisting of the most beautiful, exotic and British flowers which blow in our English gardens, accurately drawn and coloured from nature, with their botanic character, and a short account of their cultivation, their uses in medicine, with the Latin and English names / by John Edwards.
Publisher London : S. Hooper, 1775.
Physical description 1, l., 50p., 100 col. plates : col. ill. ; 44 cm.
Notes Earlier ed., 1770, has title, "The British herbal."

Or how about the Royal Horticultural Society:

They have copies of a few of Edwards' books, and they also say "fl.1768-1795".
