In TRACE ELEMENTS by Kathryn Lasky Knight, the first in her Calista Jacobs series, Calista's husband Tom dies from a rattle snake bite. It was either in his shoe or his bed, I can't remember. It was thought to be an accident. But later in the book another person dies the same way, and it turns out both were murdered.
