Here is another path to pursue: On NPR's Weekend Edition (Sept. 1, 2007),
Scott Simon interviewed A. J. Jacobs -- a fellow who has read the
Encyclopedia Britannica from A to Z.
He was relating the best and worst jobs in history. One of the best was
being a diplomat during Jefferson's presidency. The quote is quite similar
to Bruce's request except that it was the ambassador to Spain. He did not
say which volume contained this information, but he definitely said that it
was from a Jeffersonian letter. (I am not in the vicinity of the EB right
now.)
