[PW] 1970s children's book

Trying to help a friend track down this book:

"When I was a little girl, I read a book about a dragonfly larvae that lived in a pond and at the bottom of the pond was an old dog food can that had a picture of a dog holding a dog food can that had a picture of a dog holding a dog food can, etc. It was called "Beyond the Last Possible Dog" or something like that. Does anyone remember this book? It blew my little mind."
