Wow- that's a stretch! I think that tour guide may have been pulling your 
leg. I kept my own name when I married (I'm in Canada) , have never had 
anything but my own name on my passport or any other official document,  and 
have travelled plenty with my different-surname husband, and nobody in 
hotels or anywhere else has ever questioned if we were married.
