Hello Michael,

I have not read Tom Friedman's book.

Some refer to a North-South Divide when discussing global development. 
There is a description of this in Wikipedia which may lead you where you 
want to go:

Those is the "Southern" regions would be considered "non-industrialized 
countries" or non-industrialized nations."

Are  you sure that the connection was to the U.S. South and the North's 
view of same?
