OK, librarians, I have a request from a friend for help in building a new library! She has asked whether you can give any help about the following request (I apologize for the length):

**********************

In Milford, Pennsylvania, near where we have our cabin, we are helping out on the task force to get a fabulous new library built in town. The forces of good are pretty far down the road, are really wonderful, and have been working on the project for nearly two years. They announced and highly publicized a design competition for the building, to no community response, announced and displayed and publicized the resulting five or six finalists, encountering no community response, then finally chose the best of all, a gorgeous, modern looking design by a seriously notorious New York architect, Frederic Schwartz.

THEN they began to encounter the wrath of some very vocal and unhappy Milford residents, who don't like the modern design.

We understand that when Gifford Pinchot announced the design of Forest Hall in Milford in 1903 or 04, there was also pushback from the community regarding the design. Of course Forest Hall stands today as a centerpiece of the town and a prominent piece of architecture and is loved in the town.

David knows that he read an article in a book or newspaper about community pushback during the early history of Forest Hall, but now we have no idea where we found it. I konw he's not dreaming, because I remember him reading it to me. He spent two afternoons at the New York Public Library this week, but couldn't find it.

Can your stumpers dig into their super duper search engines to try to unearth such evidence? It would be a really helpful thing to be able to trot out. I thought they might not mind the request, since it's for a new library :)

As they say in Indy: Gentlemen (and gentlewomen, which they don't say), start your engines.
