Not a mystery, exactly, but one of the best science fiction short
stories of all time:  "Farewell to the Master", by Harry Bates, has as
its last four words a completely astonishing resolution of the story.
It was adapted, engagingly but far less intelligently, as the movie <The
Day The Earth Stood Still>.
