[PW] GPS

Dunno which piece of my mind I'd have to lose to spend my hard-earned with
those smoke'n'mirrors artists!
Looks as though they bought a shed-load of hobbyist boxes, switches and big
LEDs.
Have a look at their "Diversion Safes" - no criminal will EVER look for one
of these... unless they'd done a web-search.
Anyone who has been burgled with serious intent ("We know you have something
we specifically want..") rather than cash-hungries who only want your TV &c,
will go through all the serious hidey holes with a fine-tooth comb.
I say that we're talking toys and re-assurance here. <evil grin>

In this day and age, covert spying devices are available to anyone willing
to pay for them
and using them for stalking and other crimes is a very real scenario.
There are counter measures for discovering GPS and other tracking devices,
but GPS
is not the only spy/tracking technology that one needs to be protected
from. One
quality anti-spy device is the BugTrackerPro SG-BTP22 which can expose
numerous
types of device detection. GPS vehicle tracking devices, room bugs,
telephone taps,
concealed video Cameras and the "Infinity Device"

A bit pricey, but if you have reason to be concerned about such things, it
can bring
piece of mind.

Since GPS devices are sometimes hidden and used to
stalk victims, what would it require to detect a
hidden one?

I think this depends on whether you're talking about
GPS or A-GPS.
Here's a quick overview of A-GPS:
http://www.globallocate.com/A-GPS/A-GPS_Frameset.htm
and of course, Wikipedia has an entry, with an
explanation of how the
system works: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-GPS
A-GPS is basically a bare bones locator that really
never turns "off"
unless the phone is off or the battery is dead, I
think, although
some handsets (like feature-rich smartphones and PDAs)
will allow you
to choose whether you want to turn the locator off and
go to
"emergency only" mode.
A-GPS also works without the use of a SIM card; the US
uses both GSM
(like AT&T and T-Mobile) and CDMA (like Verizon and
Sprint) networks.
