One of the most famous examples of this is <Merrily We Roll Along>, a
1934 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, made into a musical by
Steven Sondheim in 1981. The musical was a flop (so was the play,
really), but Sondheim fans have tried endlessly to tinker with it in
order to make it work. Its most famous songs, perhaps, are "Not a Day
Goes By", "Good Thing Going", and "Old Friends".
