Maybe you're just the person to write it!

The earliest mention I've found is from 1925 (in the New York Times).
Apparently it is (or was) a common fund-raising entertainment put on
by Rotary, Lions, and other civic clubs. Strange that it's referred to
as a "play" but no author is ever given.
