I wonder if Deacon Brodie of Edinburgh would qualify?
On the surface he was a highly respected member of 18th century Edinburgh
society.
He was a skilled craftsman, a member of the Town Council and the leader of
the guild of Wrights and Masons.
However his work as a woodworker gave him access to the houses of rich
citizens and he was able to "case the joint" and even copy keys.
He and his gang would then return and burgle the house.
