I wouldn't say that about the great composers. They had great private tutors. In Mozart's case, his father was a world-renowned music pedagog whose books are still studied. I know there's a Romantic image of the wild untaught composer, but it's not true.

Many great composers (Beethoven, Mozart) received little or no formal
