Hi!

In the Western Provinces of Canada, date squares, prepared with an oat-meal
cake mixture and a date filling are referred to as Matrimonial Cake. A friend
has asked for the origin of the term, suggesting that perhaps it originated
during the great depression when traditional wedding cakes were beyond the
means of many young couples. Is this term used atall in the United States,
or in any other Country, and does anyone have any idea concerning the
origin of the term!
