Meredith:
The University of Pittsburgh has for many decades had
a Lantern Night ceremony as a welcome to freshmen
women -- always seems redundant or oxymoronic or
possibly both, that phrase>. Nothing to do with jack
o'lanterns, but with the old-fashioned metal kind that
hold candles, symbolizing the light of learning. I
still have my lantern: I participated in the ceremony
both as a freshman (1968) and as an older student
welcoming the frosh.
I will try to look up more info on Lantern Night's
background when I get home. It might be on the website
www.pitt.edu but it's getting to be closing time here
at the library now.
