[PW] Besieged City Question

My patron vaguely remembers what could be a historical incident or a
legend.  A city is besieged, perhaps in medieval times.  The invaders
send in a message that only the women will be allowed to leave and that
they can bring with them only what they can carry.  When the women come
out of the city they are carrying their men on their backs.

 

This sounded vaguely familiar to me and I am hoping someone recognizes
the situation.  I did a lot of googling but found nothing helpful.
