[PW] publishing history of dictionary

I have been asked to obtain an excerpt from the American Heritage 
Dictionary, New College Edition, 1972.

The "1972" is the hard part.  I don't find such a publication or RLIN or 
WorldCat, and searches on the web and used book sales sites are making me 
doubt that there ever was a New College Edition published (or copyrighted) 
in 1972.

Can anyone tell me of a source that would have the Houghton Mifflin 
publishing history for this title?  I would like to determine for sure 
whether or not I've been asked to get something that doesn't exist.
